Research brief: Understanding opioid utilization patterns across common procedures

Opioids are indicated for the treatment of moderate-to-severe pain and some chronic health conditions. But prescription of opioids on a longer-term basis following routine procedures has become increasingly common, resulting in extreme opioid overuse. To better understand opioid utilization, pain management, and excess medication disposal, 65 physicians across 12 practices participated in a study using GetWell Loop to connect with patients pre- and post-procedure.

In this research brief, learn:

  • How often patients in the study were over prescribed opioids
  • How patients were most likely to dispose of unused medication
  • Whether patient-generated data can be used to help develop benchmarks for procedure-specific opioid prescription
